Multiplication Tables

Multiplication Tables Passport

We have introduced a Multiplication Tables Passport which is more in line with the raised expectations within the revised National Curriculum.  Multiplication tables set the foundation for a child to learn more advanced mathematics later on and any child who is less confident with multiplication may have more difficulties solving more complex mathematical problems and calculations both in primary and, more importantly, in secondary school.

By the end of Year 2, children are expected to be able to recall and use all of the multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. By the end of Year 3, this should also include the 3, 4 and 8 times tables and by the end of Year 4 children are expected to know all of their times tables (up to 12 x 12) and the related division facts.  All children complete a regular tables test in school.

Each child has a Maths Passport, that will remain in school, which contains Bronze, Silver and Gold targets including those for mastering the multiplication tables:  

Bronze – recalling the multiplication facts in order.

Silver – recalling the multiplication facts in random order

Gold – recalling multiplication and division facts in random order.

The children are challenged in the passports at a level that is appropriate for them. They progress at their own speed onto the next stage.


There are a number of ways that you can help your child to learn their times tables at home:

·         Download times tables sung to music, or even a rap

·         When you’re out and about, look for numbers everywhere and then ask your child times table related facts about them

·         Your child should be able to tell you which multiplication table they are working on

·         Make flashcards of the times tables at home with your child – set aside a time each day to sit down together and practice. Making the flashcards is also a learning exercise, since your child will need to know the answer to each multiplication problem before writing it on the back of the flashcard.

·         Enlist the aid of your family. Agree to ask each other random times tables throughout the day when your child is around to hear. Race to see who can answer the problem first. Your child will enjoy beating you and other family members to the answer.
